I think everyone is taking it out of proportion the site is still completely usable and the ads don't affect anything at all, yas just need to realise that it is change and something to get used to. People complaining that the owner or Zeus didnt speak to yas first about changes need to get ya heads out because shock horror just cause ya use it doesnt mean you get to make the decisions it is the owners choice. The only people negatively affecting it are the ones leaving because they are cutting off what this site is about
I think the issue is transparency. @newowner doesn’t owe the users any explanations - it’s their company, they can run it how they want. But many people have been on here for awhile, there’s a strong sense of family and community, and it’d be ‘nice’ to understand what’s going on rather than try to guess from pattern changes. @newowner bought a new toy because he thinks it can make money and now he’s pushing buttons and pulling levers to see what does. The ‘bot thing’ plus more ads feels fishy, like he’s trying to inflate his active member count to charge more for ad placements. But we’ll see how that plays out. Random memory: I ‘think’ I remember FS did an ‘ask us anything’ forum once WAY back in time when the gods still spoke with mortals. @newowner and @zeus don’t owe us a thing - but given the recent talks of leaving, some type of official message from the heavens above would just be a really nice touch.
I didn’t think much of it. I didn’t really even notice the new ads as new until someone said something. The new owner may not be ready to make an announcement, or they may not be aware of the community well enough to even realize that they are upsetting people. Having just transferred ownership, they may not even be on the site looking because they have other things to do in getting things going- and yes- they are trying to monetize the site. I doubt they paid Zeus $10 for it, and likely would at least like to get their money back and pay the costs to keep funsub running, and hosting memes by itself is surprisingly not a profit avenue. We also don’t know the conditions of the sale- what Zeus is or isn’t allowed to do or say about what is going on, or even if he’s allowed to get involved on the site. I imagine that if you bought a website full of users who knew the old owner better- it might threaten your investment a bit to have that old owner still running around- wether they...
... intentionally were poaching users for another new project of theirs, undermining you and your administration, or accidentally doing it by saying or doing something that would trigger people to get upset. What’s more- in a vacuum of information- not having spoken to the new owner or spoken much to the old on the issue- not knowing why Zeus sold it (family issues? Financial crisis? Health? Moving on to other things?) or anything else, people are filling in the blanks themselves and taking them to mean whatever negative thing they want. I’m not telling anyone they don’t have a right to be upset or hurt. Sure- it would be nice to have a chat room or even just a post with some change over information, even just canned pleasantries and half truths, as is often the norm. But at that we’d be not much further from square one. Even in a hostile take over it is usually expected the old guard play nice and smooth the transition, because “if you don’t have anything nice to say...” and most...
... people who build something through work and sacrifice aren’t so puerile or petty that if they can’t run it their way they would rather sabatoge it than see it survive in the hands of another. So even IF Zeus was somehow twisted in to selling, didn’t like the direction of things, or didn’t like the new owner- and IF Zeus had made a lost, it’s unlikely we would get a complete and brutally honest answer. At the end of the day- people saying funsub is a community? Communities aren’t made or broken by pop ups ads and changes of owner. They are made on the relationships between people. If the funsub community keeps doing what it has always done then it can’t be broken so easily. If people decide that walking away because they are upset over this or that thing concerning change of ownership they can’t really do much about except buy funsub themselves and run it their way... then the community suffers as much or more than the new owner who just looses some money.
It's our time spent making this site, without contributers there would be no site. They do owe us an explanation, even if we are not owed a vote. USERS made the site, not the owners.
Well- by default of the premise that is somewhat inaccurate. As I say above- the community and the site are made up of the users, but the whole rampant accusations of bot posters calls into question the idea that contributors are “required” since if there are still bots contributing, there will still likely be people browsing and discussing in the comments. The site would not be the some. Objectively would it be worse? Objectively “different” doesn’t mean “worse” by default. Worse for some is better for others, so who could say?
honestly i didn't know there was a new owner, but i did notice a decline in the site, bit of a shame, it's the first thing i check after work when i get home
You guys do realize that the star is a classic positive feedback loop designed specifically to keep you engaged on this website don't you? It's explicit purpose is to keep you emotionally connected to this website so they can slide ad after ad across your eyes and charge companies accordingly.
Edit:spidey gets it!
@iccarus, good comments dont get you a star. Lots of comments that the majority of the people here agree with is what will get a star.
.
That's the problem with this particular feedback loop. It rewards people for conformity. That is the long way of saying that if independent thought is your goal, the star cannot be.
Well it sure as hell works to keep me conformed then, even if I agree with everyone else that this new stuff is a bit eyebrow raising, to say the least
I actually don't have the time to be actively engaged in the site anymore. I come in once a day to view whatever is new and I'm gone until the next.
A fight to the death works for me though. And if I can take out the doctor in the first fight the rest of funsub will be without a healer, so that just makes things easier.
