Apparently tics prefer dry climate and tall grass. They don't hang around in elm trees waiting to jump down on you.

@xvarnah will you do the honours of tagging everyone?
Idk that these were disproven in my lifetime, but they are things I was taught in various classes and grades that were not correct:
`
-bats are blind
`
-native Americans were constantly kind and only treated each other with respect and were completely civil in their warfare before white people showed up
`
-dinosaurs looked like giant lizards when in reality it seems a great many of them were covered in feathers
`
-Napoleon was short
`
-Fish can only remember things for 3 seconds and are very dumb
`
-Cardio = weight loss
`
-Volleyball is fun
`
-learning to name all of the 50 states in America is more important than learning the history of your own country
`
-humans only use a small percentage of their brains
`
-women are far more likely to be victims of abuse, rape, or violence; rarely, if ever, are men victims or women perpetrators
`
-it's "I" before "e" EXCEPT after "c," and when sounding like "a" as in "neighbour" and "weigh"
[And on weekends and holidays and all throughout May]..
The dinosaur thing had started to be conceptualised in the 90s, but for it to permeate the general public's knowledge took some time, so unless you're far younger than I imagine, it works in your lifetime :)
For abuse, rape and violence, do you have sources? I've seen that about 70% of sex traffick victims are girls and women, and 85% of domestic abuse. For the latter a difference in reports certainly plays a part, but it still seems to be a lot. So I'm intrigued!
There are a lot of sources about the stats of domestic violence etc. I started compiling a bunch and by the 20th link I realized that may be going a bit overboard haha.
`
The sad thing is we actually don't even have a full picture of male victims and survivors because it is so severely underreported and underinvestigated. It also depends somewhat on what and where you're including research from. If you include prison rape, the scales tilt even further (although, again, the exact stats are unclear)
`
When I was in school they taught that over 95% of all victims in both categories were female, and typically the only males that were victimized were children.
`
As I've grown up I've done more research into it it's become fairly apparently that women may well be victims of sexual assaults more often, men are still being harassed, assaulted, and raped FAR more than people talk about. And as far as domestic violence goes, iirc the stats are pretty well even
Female perpetrators are also far more likely to get away with it
`
When it comes to human trafficking - women are more often kidnapped for sex slavery. Men still get kidnapped for sex slavery as well in smaller numbers, and they are also kidnapped for slave labour as well - overwhelmingly more often than women are iirc. So, again, it depends which sides of the coin you want to look at. T
`
I've spoken with several survivors and one thing I've also discovered (personal experience, not scientific) is women seem to be more likely to actually identify what they've gone through as abusive.
`
I've talked to several men who described their experiences and at the end of it there is no other word for what they went through other than abuse - or, in some cases, rape. But often even though they are telling you how badly what they went through hurt them, they are also trying to shrug it off. They won't label it. They won't use those words. And often enough they've never told anyone about it either
If you want sources I can try and look a bit deeper and narrow down, but honestly the stats - as muddled and imperfect as they are - aren't too difficult to find. Whatever the correct numbers are, it's pretty clear that the amount of abuse men suffer has been incredibly dialled down. Especially domestic abuse, including verbal
Haha maybe 20's a bit much, but just 19 are fine! (From other comment sections I'd noticed you seemed to have researched this, which is why I asked you directly instead of doing the same work)
At the moment I'm looking up a doc from ManKind initiative on male abuse and in almost all of the aspects considered women are abused about 2x more, going up to 12 when it comes to sexual abuse. That's not even close from 5-95%, nor the other numbers I'd found. I'm curious as to which ones you've seen.
Also I'm aware of the underreport, and I've had two occasions discussing with men who didn't think what they had experienced was abuse. (Yet I personnally know 8 women who have been abused one way or another, which is why I got curious about the quantification of this).
Thankfully minds seem to be evolving, albeit slowly, and the surge of feminism (as in the real deal, equalitarian, not feminazis) has brought up the problem of the difference in treatment and how men are often expected to always enjoy sex no matter how unsollicited, amongst a lot of other crap.
And indeed, I hadn't considered slave labor, good point!
I was told that girls are naturally bad at math, lol. "Nothing you can do about it, you just suck!" Told by a female teacher too. I was born in 96, so this happened in the early 2000s, not that long ago. I'd expect that mindset in the 50s, not the 2000s.
One that many americans will likely have been taught
the original thanksgiving never happened. US school systems generally teach that a group of settlers were going to die of starvation but a group of natives taught them to corn and hunt to save them and they had a big feast to celebrate.
that feast never happened, that saving never happened. The event its thought to be based on is a colony leader hosting a celebratory dinner after having a particularly successful day hunting down and exterminating a local tribe.
That oil and gas is made from dinosaurs, and that's why they're called fossil fuels
I'm not sure if that was ever considered fact and disproven, but it's something I was taught in school that I have since learned is not true
WHERE DO I BEGIN?
Let’s see umm the internet is filled with criminals and hackers.
It’s really just people like you and some ass holes.
Eggs are bad for you
Eggs are good for you lol
They taught me only Jewish people went to camps in ww2
Not true there was many types of people.
Also America put people into camps as well
Pilgrims were nice to native Americans
Columbus discovered America
Pluto is a planet
I STILL SAY IT IS!!!!
Seriously I can go on forever
hmm I can't remember all of them, but one fun fact is that you only have 5 senses. this is actually false! some scientists even say we have up to 21! and here is a few others ( copied from another site )
.
Thermoception - the sense of heat (there is some debate that the sense of cold may be a separate sense)
Nociception - the perception of pain
Equilibrioception - the perception of balance
Proprioception - the perception of body awareness (close your eyes and touch your nose. Got it first time? That's proprioception in action)
( sensorytrust . org . uk / blog/ how- many-senses-do-we-have )
then of course there's gender vs sex. when I was in elementary school it was " dick equals xy chromosome equals boy " and vice versa. never any talk of intersex individuals, xxy, xyy, etc etc let alone that gender and sex wasn't intrinsically linked. and unfortunately people still rely on this middle school biology without realizing that it was oversimplified for us in school ( poorly )
science and facts do, actually, support the existence of trans and nonbinary people. so does anthropology and the study of older societies. but because it's grossly oversimplified in schools, people seem unwilling to correct their understanding as they get older and seem to think it's the only truth. it's like if people said "every animal in the water is a fish" because explaining the difference between fish, aquatic mammals and amphibians would be too complicated. but then people go through life saying that frogs and whales are obviously fish because they swim in the water.
So true! The "chromosome crowd" drives me mad. They learnt this simplified version in middle school and now they can't accept that actual biology is a lot more complicated. There are so many different chromosomal combinations, a lot of which aren't distinguishable by the naked eye from what we consider "normal", ie. XX and XY. For example XYY symptoms are above average height, acne prone skin and learning difficulties. Just off the top of my head I can name multiple individuals I know who might have it, or each of those symptoms can just be caused by something else.
The "gender = XX or XY" people use chromosomes as the end all be all because they don't want to admit they're just judging people by what they look like, which would make then have to admit gender is at least in part performative and not set in stone.
